How to make your break more effective

How often do you skip your break to overcompensate for your job? Once a week? More often?

We are all familiar with work pressure, especially when deadline is close and job still needs to be done. However, giving up your break is never a good option. Impression of saving some time quickly turns out to be misleading. When you don’t rest your head once every few hours of work, your productivity declines. Actually, the more often you take a break the better your results may become.

It is proven that our brains work the most effective at the beginning and at the end of the process. The more breaks you take, the more “beginnings” and “ends” you have and than your productivity increases – simple, right? So if you feel that your concentration is dropping, take 5 minutes off and go make a fresh cup of coffee.

Read on to find out 10 ways to boost your break!

 1. PUT YOURSELF ON OFFLINE MODE
Leave your laptop and your phone in the office when you go for a break (or at least switch it off). If you stay in the office, don’t browse your mail box and stop editing your files. Take a real break, cut yourself off from all your duties. Clean your mind out of your job concerns. This time is for you to relax.

 2. EAT SOMETHING DELICIOUS
Don’t treat your food like your fuel only, make it your daily pleasure. Treat yourself with good lunch in a cafe every once in a while. Pizza fan? Ask around the office and make a big order with delivery. No place to eat out? Take up this little effort to get up earlier and prepare nice lunch to take away. It’s always nice to hear: “Wow, what’s this? You made it yourself? Looks yummy!” And you just nod and enjoy!

Soon it will turn out that it’s not that hard to keep this work-life balance when you can nicely combine both parts. Don’t hesitate to schedule lunch out with other people from business. Not specifically for business reasons but just to exchange ideas and experiences while enjoy a good meal. A boost of creativity and energy in one! And, who knows, maybe a start of new cooperation?

4. DO SOMETHING FOR YOUR HOBBY
Take a moment for yourself and do something you like the most – read a chapter of a book, scan a magazine, watch an episode of your fav series or go for small shopping. Whatever you feel like doing at the moment – including visit in a museum around the corner. Focus on your little fun and charge your batteries a bit.

5. GET BUSY WITH OTHER DUTIES
Going to be a busy day? Why not to start with some household duties now than? Check local market for dinner groceries, take a walk to laundry or visit pharmacy close. You can draw your attention away from work for a moment and cross off some stuff from daily “To do” list!

6. TAKE A NAP!
Powerful nap is nothing surprising nowadays! Even if that was never your habit but you keep on having an power drop on afternoons, maybe it’s worth considering? Already a quarter can give you a proper kick of energy. To boost the effect even more, drink an espresso shortly before you fall asleep. Before it starts working, you’ll be back awake, looking for a way to release your energy!

7. MAKE EXCITING PLANS!
Use your break to plan your summer holidays, weekend city break or romantic date. Ask your colleagues of recommendations of vacation destinations or good restaurants in your city. It can turn out that your desk neighbour has a proven apartment in Barcelona or knows great loyalty program for foodies – always good to know! Besides, you won’t deny that palms and drinks in coconuts are not a great motivator to keep going!

8 GET SOME FRESH AIR
If only weather allows (winter doesn’t count! If there is no rain that it’s good enough) – get yourself out of the office! Fresh air oxygenates your brain better and invigorates its operation. Visit adjacent park or just take a short walk, even to the nearest store. An alternative for the lazy: put your window wide open and take a few breathes. Stretch your back, look at the sky and watch people moving outside. Focus your eyes on different objects (for example, try to find ten things in the same color).

9. DO SIMPLE WORK-OUT
If you have an opportunity to take up some physical activity – don’t be unwise not to use it! Nowadays, more and more offices provide some sport facilities. Come on, talk your workmate into a table tennis round. A bit of healthy competition will serve you both! If you don’t have this possibility at your work – take the matter into your own hands. Bring out you old bike or buy a swimming pass. Physical effort will set your mind back ready to work.

10. SAY “NO” TO RUTINE!
Routine is what kills creativity and productivity. Don’t let your day become boring, even if your job seems to be quite repeatable. There is always a way to diverse it a bit – everything start in your head. What you can do already is providing yourself with a daily portion of fun to keep your motivation high.
