If you consider yourself as a good salesman you should agree with me when I say that you shouldn’t treat your clients equally. Simply because they are not the same people. They may be even not alike. You can difference your contacts using different criteria. Let me give you a few examples:
1. Start with the main division of people you communicate with into various groups: customers, prospects, partners, subcontractors, suppliers etc. It is obvious that all these groups require different kind of information and updates. Also, the frequency of interaction is different.
2. Divide your customers (also applicable to leads) on the basis of their favoured communication channel. It will enable you to benefit both from economies of scales and customization power.
3. If your clients are spread over the whole country (or even further) maybe it is handy to select them on the ground of place of residence? You can address them all at once when your organise local event or promotion program on limited scale. Maybe customers living in the North have different needs and habits that people from southern part of the country? Shouldn’t that be considered?
4. Divide your inbound and outbound generated leads. Your company acquired these people in completely different ways – so they have different knowledge about you, more or less specified needs and they are in a totally different spot within a sales cycle. So, make sure that your incoming and outcoming leads are divided into (at least) two separate lists.
In general – take a moment and think about the main differences between your contacts. Focus on these that directly apply to your work activities – your product offer, sales strategy and marketing communication. Than group all people with similar needs, expectations or involement level into lists. Yes, it’s that easy!
